holidays just don't feel like holidays

As the year came to an end, there was a sense of anticipation in the air. The holiday season was approaching, and it seemed like everyone around me was joyously preparing to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year. But for me, this year was different. The holidays didn’t feel like holidays anymore – not in the way they used to.

In years past, the holidays were a time of excitement and happiness. They were filled with laughter and cheer, with family and friends coming together to celebrate love, joy, and togetherness. There were phone calls and text messages, video calls that filled the void of physical distance. But this year, there was nothing. No phone calls wishing me a happy holiday, no text messages filled with love and warmth, no video calls that made me feel connected to my loved ones.

The absence of family get-togethers was particularly painful. The tradition of gathering around a decorated tree, exchanging gifts, and sharing meals was replaced by an eerie silence. The empty chairs at the dining table served as a constant reminder of the void in my life. The laughter and chatter that once filled the room were replaced by a deafening silence. It felt like the holiday spirit had vanished overnight.

But what hurt the most was the fact that I had no friends to hang out with. In the past, we would gather together, exchanging gifts, playing games, and creating memories that would last a lifetime. But this year, there were no invitations, no plans made, and no faces of familiar friends to comfort me. I reached out, but it seemed like everyone was busy with their own lives. Loneliness became my only companion.

Amidst this isolation, something strange happened. I didn’t feel bad or angry this year. In fact, I felt nothing at all. The constant state of depression that had engulfed my being had rendered me emotionally numb. The emptiness was so profound that there were no tears, no laughter, and no joy. It was as if my heart had turned to stone, incapable of feeling anything, let alone the joyous spirit of the holidays.

The holidays had always been a time of introspection, a chance to reflect on the year gone by and to feel grateful for the blessings in my life. But this year, gratitude felt like a distant memory. It felt impossible to appreciate anything when there was a constant cloud of despair hanging overhead. The world around me seemed dull and lifeless, devoid of the magic that the holidays used to bring.

It is said that holidays are a time to be surrounded by loved ones, to share moments of love and happiness, and to create memories that will last a lifetime. But for me, this year was a painful reminder of everything I had lost. The holidays had lost their sparkle, their ability to bring joy and happiness into my life.

As the holiday season came to a close, I couldn’t help but wonder if things would ever be the same again. Will the holidays ever feel like holidays again? Will I ever be able to find joy in the simple things, to feel the warmth of love and connection? Only time will tell. But for now, I remain trapped in the numb emptiness, longing for the holidays to regain their magic once more.
