death of democracy

On February 18th, 2025, with the stroke of a pen, the foundation of American democracy was put on life support. While many Americans were going about their daily lives, an executive order was signed that effectively claims the president alone can determine “what the law is.” If this sounds alarming, it should. This isn’t just another executive order – it’s an attempted coup against our constitutional system of government.

Let’s be crystal clear about what’s happening. Remember your high school civics class? The one where you learned about three co-equal branches of government? That system, which has protected American democracy for over 200 years, is being dismantled while Congress sits in shameful silence

The Implications Are Staggering:

The End of Judicial Review

Since 1803, Marbury v. Madison has established that courts have the power to review laws and executive actions for constitutionality. This executive order attempts to erase two centuries of constitutional law with a single signature. Think about that. The courts’ fundamental role in our democracy is being stripped away.

Absolute Power

When one person claims the sole authority to interpret laws, we no longer have a democracy – we have a dictatorship. History has shown us this pattern repeatedly, and it always ends the same way. Always.

The Death of Accountability

Independent agencies like the FTC, SEC, and FCC would be forced to submit to direct White House control. These agencies were created to be independent for a reason – to prevent exactly this kind of power grab.

Your Rights Are Next

If the president can interpret any law however they want, what stops them from “interpreting” your constitutional rights away? Freedom of speech? Subject to presidential interpretation. Due process? Only if the president agrees with that interpretation. Second Amendment? Whatever the president says it means.

The Deafening Silence

Perhaps most disturbing is the silence from Congress. These elected officials, who swore an oath to defend the Constitution, are watching democracy die and doing nothing. Multiple legal challenges are already being filed, but where are our representatives?

Their silence isn’t just cowardice – it’s complicity.

Historical Parallels We Can’t Ignore

This playbook isn’t new. Every authoritarian takeover in history has followed a similar pattern:

  • Claim emergency powers
  • Undermine independent institutions
  • Concentrate power in one person
  • Silence opposition
  • Rewrite or “reinterpret” laws

Sound familiar?

What You Can Do

Speak Up

Don’t normalize this. Don’t accept this as just another political story. This is a five-alarm fire for American democracy.

Contact Congress

Call, email, write, and show up at their offices. Make it impossible for them to ignore this crisis. Their silence is a choice – make it an uncomfortable one.

Support Legal Challenges

Organizations are already fighting this in court. Support them. Democracy needs more than thoughts and prayers right now.

Spread Awareness

Share this post. Talk to your friends and family. Help others understand what’s at stake. This isn’t about left or right – it’s about the survival of American democracy.

Document Everything

Keep records of all attempts to contact representatives. Their silence today will be judged by history tomorrow.

The Point of No Return

We are standing at a crossroads in American history. This isn’t hyperbole – it’s reality. The question isn’t whether democracy is under attack; it’s whether we’ll defend it.

Every authoritarian takeover has a point of no return – a moment when resistance becomes impossible. We’re not there yet, but we can see it from here.

The Choice Is Yours

Your grandchildren will ask you about this moment. They’ll want to know what you did when democracy was under attack. Will you tell them you stayed silent? Or will you tell them you stood up? The time for action is now. Tomorrow might be too late.
